14 May 1727 - 2 August 1788
His father, a schoolteacher , was impressed by his talents and when he was 14 he was sent to London to study art. Gainsborough once said "while portraiture was his profession landscape painting was his pleasure." He moved to London permanently in 1774 and became a founding member of the Royal Academy. His nephew Gainsborough Dupont was the only assistant he had.
