1697 - 25 October 1764

Hogarth was born at Smithfield in London and as a lad withnessed his father's imprisonment in the Fleet prison when his coffee house became insolvent. As he developed as a painter he also became quite politically active and worked to have a copyright law passed which would protect the work of engravers and artists. After an extended period of ill health he died in 1764
