These documents were awarded or granted to people, partnerships, and groups in order to facilitate the founding of colonies in America. Although given with the intent of encouraging the organized settlement of new English Colonies, they formed the basis of a new birth of democracy which was to draw upon the ancient Greek beliefs of political justice and transform the world.
