On of the younger sports notables in England, Alan was
born in Gosforth - Newcastle. A longtime supported of Newcastle
United, Alan's boyhood soccer hero was Kevin Keegan. Shearer's soccer
skills became apparent early on when at the age of 12 he scored 13
goals in one game, was the captain of his school game and was invited
to trails at Newcastle. Unfortunately for Newcastle, he played goal in
the trails and was un-noticed by them but was noticed by a scout form
Southampton and was signed by them |
|
|
At 15 he left Newcastle
and in his 1988 league debut he became the youngest player
ever to score a first-class hat trick. He gained a
reputation for being the hardest working player on the team
which served him well in his rapid advancement into the
upper level of soccer superstars. The Blackburn Rovers paid
a record £3.6 million for Shearer in 1992 and by the
1994/95 season they were able to win the Premiership title
which the Rovers had not won in 81 years. |
|
He scored 30 or more
goals in 3 consecutive seasons which is a feat unmatched by
any other player in English Football history. The Euro-96
games saw Shearer score 5 goals which established him as the
scoring leader. In 1996 Alan Shearer's dreams came true when
he signed with the only club he really wanted to play with,
Newcastle, after turning down several other better offers.
To top off his return to Newcastle, his coach there was
boyhood idol Kevin Keegan. He signed for £15m. |

|
On August 6,
1996, 15,000 fans turned up in a rainstorm to welcome him
home. Although his first season saw several injuries and the
departure of Keegan, he has shone as an outstanding player
personality on the field. He lead the English team in the
1998 World Cup in France and has remained a star player in
the league. |
|
He has remained firmly
planted in his Newcastle roots and proud of his parents
working class background. Shearer has never been the most
spectacular person when the media shone it's spotlight on
him, and has often been made fun of because of his family
ordinary lifestyle, but once again what he may lack in front
of the interview camera he makes up for through hard work
and spectacular play in front of the game camera. |
|
|
Shearer was once challenged by team-mates to incorporate the
title of an Abba song into an interview. So he answered a
question with: "Yes, but the winner takes it all." In a now
famous comment, Shearer said that he would be celebrating
Blackburn's triumph by "going home and creosoting the garden
fence".
