Potentially the greatest player ever to tie a pair of boots on, George Best had it all. He could weave between attacking opponents, put on a burst of speed that rocketed him past defenders and when he lost the ball he would work twice as hard to get it back. He was born in East Belfast in Northern Ireland and as a young player caught the attention of almost everyone who saw him play. In 1963 he was signed by Manchester United and made an immediate impact upon the clubs fortunes. Between 1963 and 1973 he scored 178 goals in 446 games for United. In 1968 Manchester United won the European Cup and won the League Championship twice during Best's career with them. In the European Cup final he stepped it up and scored and incredible solo goal. Besides being a skilled and creative player, Best was a tough player. Day in and day out he could take the knocks and kicks of opponents who would try just about anything to slow him down, and this was before the time when the referee's would look out for the Super Star

players a little more then the rest. He could shoot with either foot and could jump as high as almost anyone in the league. He had the complete package and was not afraid to show it off. During his rise as Manchester United's star player he also enjoyed the lifestyle and fun of the 60's. He was sometimes dubbed the 5th Beatle due to his popularity with the press and his exposure to England in the press.

The 60's became the era of swinging England and George enjoyed everything which that stood for. In 1968 he won both the European and the English award as footballer of the year. For that year and then next 4 he was the leading scorer in the league. He set a record against Northampton in 1970 when he scored 6 or 8 goals for Manchester in a 8-2 win.

By 1974 his fast living and flamboyant lifestyle had begun to take their toll and he then began a trend of quickly changing teams and playing for a season or two before he again changed clubs. He played for other English teams but in 1976 he headed for America and the North American Soccer League which had attracted other superstars such as Pele.

He switched to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers for the 1978-79 season and then went to the San Jose Quake for the 1980-81 season.  He then returned home to England and played out the remainder of his career with Bournemouth to 1983. During the 1990's Best became a regular and successful commentator with Sky Sports but then faced Liver failure and only just made it through that crisis.

Best probably still has his greatest memories from his time with Manchester United and the United fans still love him as the player that spun off so much glory and excitement during his career at Old Trap.
