Mary's famous prison

An Area of Contrasts

Home to the beautiful lake district and doorway to the Scottish highlands, the Northwest boasts a variety of unique landscapes. This region served as the source of Stone axes for a large part of Europe during the Neolithic age. In play between the Kingdoms, of Scotland and England, Carlisle Castle was the site of countless sieges between the powers and served as the prison for Mary Queen of the Scots when Elizabeth captured her.
